How I Help Transgender Teens Become who They Want to Be

Leading Pediatric Endocrinologist Norman Spack talks about blockers and hormone treatments for transgender kids.

Dr. Norman Spack is a pediatric endocrinologist at Boston’s Children Hospital and the co-founder of the hospital’s Gender Management Service clinic. He is internationally known and one of the leading specialists in treatment for transgender youth.

In his talk for TEDx, Spack discusses how he grew to understand transgender youths and develop groundbreaking treatments to help them. Spack argues that transgender kids tend to be much happier – and less likely to harm themselves – when they’re able to live in their preferred gender role.

Synopsis

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren’t comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)
