Dove released a new commercial this week that features Shea, a transgender mom.
“Moms are redefining what it means to be a ‘good mom.’”
The ad begins with text reading, “Moms are redefining what it means to be a ‘good mom,’” as it depicts mothers of all races, sexual orientations, and careers. Shea and her partner are a lesbian couple who are both raising their son as mothers. “We are both his biological parents,” says Shea. “You get people that are like, ‘What do you mean? You’re the mom?’ We’re like, ‘Yep. We’re both gonna be moms.’ ” She later adds, “There’s no one right way to do it all.”
The spot features six mothers in total, and they are each raising their babies in different ways showing there is not a single right way to be a mother. It also features a mom who is raising her son on a ranch, a stay at home mom, a rock climbing mom and one who break dances. Though all the women live completely different lives, they are all good mothers.
The ad from Dove is just the latest in a trend depicting transgender moms in advertising. Just recently, Vicks released an ad in India that showcased a mother’s struggle to legally adopt her daughter.
