Transgender Murder in Philadelphia

Maya Young, a 25 year old transgender woman, was murdered in Philadelphia on Saturday according to reports by Philly.com and Autostraddle

Young was stabbed several times in the neck and chest sometime before 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, according to the police. Officers were called to the 4900 block of Griscom Street and found the victim nearby in the 4800 block of Penn Street. She was taken to the Aria Health-Frankford Hospital, where she died at 12:21 a.m.

Maya Young 2The police identified her as “Norman Lindsey, a transgender female known to the LGBT community as Maya Young. Young was originally misgendered in a report by ABC 6 Philadelphia. They have since posted a correction.

Young’s death is the latest in a series of murders involving transgender women of color in Philadelphia. London Kiki Chanel, 21, was stabbed to death last May in North Philly and Kiesha Jenkins, 22, was beaten, robbed and shot in Logan last year. There were 21 reported transgender murders in the United States in 2015. We are off to a bad start in 2016.

Here is the official release from the 15th District police in Philadelphia:

“On Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 11:50pm, 15th District Police responded to a report of a Stabbing on the Highway at 4900 Griscom Street. Upon arrival Officers searched the area for a victim; whom they located in front of 48XX Penn Street lying on the highway suffering from multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest. The victim was transported to Frankford Aria Hospital by Police and pronounced at 12:21am. At this time the motive is unknown and the investigation is ongoing with the Homicide Unit. There is a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction in all homicide investigations.”
